Description of Insulin TreatmentInsulin acts to regulate the metabolism of glucose and the process necessary for the intermediary metabolism of fats, carbohydrates and proteins. Insulin lowers blood glucose levels and promotes transport and entry of glucose into muscle cells and other tissues.

Inadequate secretion of insulin results in hyperglycemia (high glucose levels in the blood), and hyperlipemia (high lipid levels), and in the characteristic signs of diabetes mellitus - including polydipsia (excessive intake of fluids due to increased thirst, polyuria (excessive urination), and, eventually, lethargy and weight loss.

Uncorrected severe deficiency of insulin is incompatible with life.

There are several different formulations of insulin available by prescription. Your doctor will help you decide which type, or combination of types are best for you.
